I created GemsbySidney in August 2020, during the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic when the whole world shut down. It was a difficult adjustment to a new life, with everything remote, jobs were hard to seek out. I then saw a lot of people selling jewelry on Etsy and that led to me to start learning jewelry making myself.
Prior to August, I had no experience in jewelry making, and even to this day, I am still learning and teaching myself new methods and techniques. As a design student, I put lots of attention to detail and color, which led to me making jewelry based on floral and nature's aesthetics. As someone who is allergic to flowers, I wanted to be able to appreciate the beauty of nature through a wearable form.
Two years now from 2020, I feel like I am at a place where I finally feel secured about myself. Big thanks to all my supporters! It took me two years to prove myself to my family that this was a path worth following. Coming from a traditional Asian household, pursuing design to begin with was a controversial debate. I know they wanted what's best for me but I believe life is about pursuing something you love at your own pace, rather than competing with others in the job market.
Looking back at everything I've gone through in this business, both the good and bad, it has changed me as a designer, an entrepreneur, and built my character to be a stronger, more confident person. I strive to continue to bring out the best of my designs and I hope you guys can follow me through this journey!
